K-6 Gifted and Talented Program
Students are the first priority at Big Sandy Schools. The District is committed to the recognition of individual differences among students and to serving the social, emotional, physical, and academic needs of the young people enrolled in our schools. Our goal is to enrich the education of all students through events and activities designed to expose them to a variety of challenging and higher-order critical and creative thinking processes.
Serving on the Big Sandy Elementary Gifted and Talented Committee are members:
Sonny Broesder, Administrator; Barry Coy, Counselor; Pam Bold, Elementary Head Teacher; Heather Wolery, Teacher; Alma Terry, Paraprofessional; Dora Huckins, Gifted & Talented Coordinator; and Melanie Schwarzbach, Parent.
In the Classroom...
Students that qualify and are identified in the Gifted & Talented Program are able to participate in enhancement activities within their own classrooms with the teacher's individualized instruction and monitoring of progress. Teachers may provide enhancement activities from their content curriculum materials and/or independent projects that students complete in their classroom.
Pull Out Program...
During this school year, Ms. Dora Huckins has been working with a small group of students in a pull-out program. These students meet twice a week for 55-minute sessions. They were able to choose their individual projects and work independently on them with teacher supervision.
